Autonomous electric drones for forest thinning

About

AirForestry is a Swedish deep-tech company founded in 2020 and headquartered in Uppsala. It develops an autonomous, electric multi-drone system that thins forests from the air. Its drones use AI and computer vision to select trees, grip the top of each tree with a lightweight harvesting tool, delimb and fell it close to the ground, then lift it to a drop-off site before returning for the next tree. The company says this avoids soil compaction, root damage and machine tracks, and that its method can increase forest growth by up to 8% per harvest cycle.

The company has progressed from a 1-metre prototype in 2020 to a 6.2-metre full-scale drone in 2021, a first full-cycle harvest in the field in 2025, and an autonomous harvest sequence in the field in 2026. Its first drone harvest in a real forest was reported in May 2026, and a two-consecutive-tree harvest without intermediate landing was completed in 2026. The system is designed for a six-drone fleet. Offtake agreements have been signed with Sveaskog, Högtorps Gård and Hargs Bruk, and a Swedish Pilot Project (SAPP) with Holmen, SCA, Stora Enso and Sveaskog was announced in May 2026. A Norwegian pilot with Statskog in Meråker is planned from 2027, and Tele2 and Nokia provided a private 5G network for drone control.

Funding comes from Northzone, SEB Greentech VC, Kiko VC, CapitalT, Walerud Ventures, Cloudbreak VC and Sveaskog, plus grants from the Swedish Energy Agency, Vinnova and the European Innovation Council. In February 2026 the company secured SEK 28M in pre-Series A convertible financing, and in September 2026 it received an EIC equity term sheet. The company reports about 35 or more staff and is recruiting engineers and technicians.
