About
Alpine Quantum Technologies GmbH (AQT) is an Innsbruck-based company developing trapped-ion quantum computers. It was founded in February 2018 by Rainer Blatt, Thomas Monz and Peter Zoller as a spin-off of the University of Innsbruck and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, drawing on more than six decades of trapped-ion research. The company builds quantum computers designed to fit standard 19-inch rack cabinets, operating at room temperature and consuming less than two kilowatts, so they can integrate into existing high-performance computing data centres. Its product line includes the IBEX Q1 system, the LYNX series launched in May 2026 with a Quantum Volume of 32768, laboratory instruments such as the PINE SET-UP, BEECH and ROWAN, and the ARNICA cloud service with SDK connectors and an offline quantum simulator.
AQT's systems have been deployed at public research and supercomputing sites. Its ion-trap computer was procured by the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre and Munich Quantum Valley and became operational in 2024, and a hybrid HPC infrastructure was built with the University of Innsbruck. AQT was selected as vendor for the EuroHPC quantum computer PIAST-Q, which was inaugurated in Poznań, Poland in June 2025. Its computers are available through cloud partners including T-Systems, Amazon Braket and Scaleway, and it has partnerships with Quantum Rings, Horizon Quantum, Classiq and Quanscient.
AQT participates in European quantum programmes, including the Quantum Internet Alliance, where it contributes trapped-ion hardware for quantum networking, and the CHAMP-ION ion-trap pilot line. It was named a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer in 2020 and received a €2.5M EIC Accelerator grant in 2022. Its investors include the Austrian research promotion agency FFG, the University of Innsbruck and the Federation of Industrialists Tyrol.
