About

Anavo Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Leiden, Netherlands, with an R&D hub in Heidelberg, Germany. It focuses on phosphatases, a class of enzymes that regulate cell signalling pathways and had remained largely untargeted by drug developers, while protein kinases have been extensively exploited. The company's IGNITE platform combines phosphatase disease biology, structural methods, high-throughput screening and selectivity technologies to develop allosteric small molecule modulators that act away from the enzyme's active site.

Anavo is developing a proprietary pipeline of first-in-class programs, primarily in oncology and autoimmune disease, and intends to support partners in building pipelines across a range of therapeutic indications. Its scientific advisory board includes academic phosphatase researchers and oncology drug discovery executives. Birgit Zech serves as CEO, and Edward Holson was appointed Chief Scientific Officer and President of Anavo US in October 2024.

Anavo launched in April 2021 with a EUR 20 million seed financing led by M Ventures and INKEF Capital, with Taiho Ventures and Bioqube Ventures as co-leads. In May 2023 the seed round was extended by EUR 8.5 million, with MRL Ventures Fund joining as a new investor, bringing the total seed funding to EUR 28 million. In September 2026 Vincent G. Brichard was appointed Chairman of the Board.
