About
Aquark Technologies is a Southampton-origin UK quantum technology company, a University of Southampton spin-out, that builds miniaturised, deployable cold-atom hardware for sensing and timing. Its products include the AQlock atomic clock (now AQlock 2), the AQurate spectroscopy module and the AQuest miniaturised cold-atom system. The company's core technology is a patented magnetic-field-free cold atom trap, the Super-Molasses Trap, which reduces the size, weight, power consumption and cost of quantum sensors.
Aquark targets GNSS-independent position, navigation and timing for critical infrastructure such as telecoms networks, power grids, radar and defence systems, as well as finance and data centres. Its hardware has been tested in air, at sea and underwater, including a drone flight trial with MBDA, Royal Navy trials aboard HMS Pursuer, an underwater trial with the National Oceanography Centre, and a 2026 quantum-timing radar trial with Saab UK and the Royal Navy.
Commercial traction includes a 2024 EUR 5M seed round led by the NATO Innovation Fund, Innovate UK contracts (GBP 3.4M in 2024 and GBP 1.4M in 2025 for an AQlock 2 deployment at a UK telecoms site), selection for the Airbus Defence and Space UK Space Accelerator and the NATO DIANA programme, and a Danish subsidiary, Aquark Technologies ApS, registered at the Niels Bohr Institute in 2026.
