Superconducting amplifiers for qubit readout

About

Arctic Instruments is a Finnish company based in Espoo that develops and manufactures superconducting microwave amplifiers for reading out the state of qubits in quantum computers. The company was founded in 2024 as a spin-off from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, commercialising superconducting circuit technology developed at VTT over many years.

Its flagship product is the AI-TWPA-C, a traveling-wave parametric amplifier with a bandwidth of 4.5 to 9.5 GHz, a dynamic range of about -95 dBm, and added noise measured below one photon, within the margin of the standard quantum limit of 0.5 photons. The device uses an integrated flux bias line instead of an external coil, and an on-chip superconducting pump coupler that was introduced in an updated version in October 2025. In March 2026 the company launched the AI-TWPA-C-M, a pre-assembled module that combines the AI-TWPA-C with double-junction isolators and magnetic shielding. Each unit is factory-calibrated and shipped with a test report covering gain, added noise and dynamic range.

The main application is dispersive readout of superconducting transmon and fluxonium qubits, as well as waveguide QED experiments and low-power quality factor measurements of high-Q resonators. Customers range from academic research groups to quantum computer builders. Standard orders of up to five units are typically shipped within one to three weeks.

Arctic Instruments raised EUR 2.35 million in a seed round led by Lifeline Ventures in December 2024 to scale amplifier development, production and commercialisation. In July 2025 a Nature Communications paper reported record superconducting transmon coherence using an early prototype TWPA from VTT, which later became the AI-TWPA-C. The company exhibited at the APS Global Physics Summit in 2025 and joined the Finnish Quantum Delegation to South Korea in April 2025.
