High-latitude autonomy for extreme Arctic ops

About

Arctic Research and Development (ARD) is a UK/US deep-technology company building hardware, software, and autonomous systems purpose-engineered for extreme high-latitude environments. Founded in June 2025 by record-breaking polar explorers Ben Saunders and Frederick Fennessy, the company targets the intersection of autonomy, climate resilience, and national security in the Far North. ARD is incorporated in England (Arctic Research & Development Ltd) and has a parallel Delaware-incorporated US entity (ARDC), with its operational headquarters in Calmsden, Cirencester in the Cotswolds.

ARD's technology stack spans Arctic-native autonomy software (designed to function through months of cold and darkness), rugged hardware, and field-proven operational frameworks drawing on decades of combined polar expedition experience. Among its early products is Icelink — an 18 kg, suitcase-sized orange communications hub combining high-bandwidth broadband, GPS antennas, and multi-day battery endurance, designed for operations where standard connectivity fails. The team also develops virtual mapping tools that accurately represent polar geography beyond the distortions of standard Mercator projections, a capability with direct defense relevance.

ARD serves government, defense, research, logistics, and energy clients operating in the Far North. The company's founders bring direct Ministry of Defence innovation engagement experience alongside elite polar field credentials — together covering approximately 12,000 km on skis in the Arctic. The startup has attracted attention from defense tech media and was featured in a Wall Street Journal investigation into high-tech warfare challenges in the Arctic (January 2026). The company is a signatory of the UK Armed Forces Covenant and is actively hiring engineers across software and machine learning disciplines.
