Fuel-flexible small gas turbine packages

About

Aurelia Technologies, also known as Aurelia Turbines, develops and manufactures small gas turbine packages for distributed power generation and combined heat and power (CHP). Its flagship products are the 400 kWe Aurelia A400 turbine, which has electrical efficiency above 40%, and the 800 kW modular turbine package for scalable on-site power. The turbines use a streamlined radial inflow design with fewer moving parts, and they run on natural gas, biogas, syngas, flare gas, and hydrogen blends of up to 70% with no internal changes.

The technology was developed over decades of research in high-speed turbomachinery and fluid dynamics at Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland. The company was founded in 2013 by Matti Malkamäki to commercialise this work, and it holds substantial intellectual property on its core technology. Early funding came from the European Innovation Council, which backed the company through Horizon 2020 SME Instrument grants, and from the Finnish Climate Fund, which granted a €5 million capital loan in December 2021. In 2025 the company expanded to the United States and relocated its headquarters to Katy, Texas.

The company's first commercial A400 shipment was made in 2020 from its factory in Lappeenranta. Later deployments include a turbine delivered to a site near Bremen, Germany in 2021, the ROBINSON combined heat and power project on Eigerøy island in Norway, which was commissioned in 2024, and an order for 10 turbines for waste-to-energy use in Brazil in 2024. In 2023 Jhuo Sih International, a Taiwan-based integrator, ordered 20 turbine configurations for regional packaging. Aurelia also leads the EU-funded MARPOWER project to develop a zero-emission gas turbine energy conversion system for maritime transport, which completed its first milestone in March 2025.

In June 2026 the company announced a strategic partnership with Velo3D to apply metal additive manufacturing to its gas turbine platforms. Tony Hynes serves as Executive Vice President of International Sales, and Rob Marchitello is listed as chief executive officer in later sources.
