About

Automata is a London-based lab automation company that builds integrated, AI-ready platforms for life sciences laboratories. It was founded in 2015 by architects Mostafa ElSayed and Suryansh Chandra, who had worked together at Zaha Hadid Architects. The company began by making Eva, a portable six-axis desktop robotic arm aimed at manufacturing, and later refocused on life sciences, where it develops open, modular lab automation.

The current product is LINQ, a software-defined orchestration platform with a node-based Canvas, a Python SDK, a run manager and an MCP-enabled connection to AI models. It runs alongside LINQ Bench, a modular lab bench with configurable high-density layouts, robot and staff access from either side, and bridge and maglev transport options. LINQ integrates with third-party instruments through a REST API and supports parallel workflow execution, real-time analytics and version control. Applications include genomics, cell biology, assay and screening, and cell culture.

Automata's customers include NHS trusts such as The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, research institutes such as The Francis Crick Institute and the Earlham Institute, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies. The company states that it counts five top pharma companies among its customers. In January 2026 it announced a strategic partnership with Danaher, under which Danaher companies including Molecular Devices and Beckman Coulter Life Sciences integrate with LINQ, and in January 2026 it announced a partnership with CellVoyant to combine LINQ with AI-driven cell culture optimisation. The company also works with NVIDIA on connecting AI agents to automated lab infrastructure.
