About
Avenue Biosciences is a transatlantic protein engineering company spun out of the University of Helsinki, with laboratory operations in Helsinki, Finland and its headquarters in Palo Alto, California. Its platform combines high-throughput wet-lab chemistry and synthetic biology with machine learning to screen libraries of thousands of natural and synthetic N-terminal signal peptides, measuring protein secretion efficiency at the individual cell level and identifying combinations that maximize secretory output.
The company targets biologics developers, including those making antibodies, fusion proteins, cell and gene therapies, mRNA therapies, enzymes and AI-designed proteins, as well as biotechnology tool makers. It claims the approach works with any mammalian production system and aims to reduce time-to-market and production costs, citing industry figures that around 40% of human secretome proteins fail to produce in a standard CHO pipeline.
Avenue raised a $2.5M seed round led by Voima Ventures in October 2024 and a $5.7M seed extension co-led by Balnord and Tesi in January 2026, bringing reported total funding to $8.7M. In July 2026 it announced a research collaboration with Circio Holding to combine its signal peptide technology with Circio's circVec gene therapy platform.
