About
Blackswan Space is a Vilnius-based space technology company founded in 2019 that develops software and hardware products enabling spacecraft to operate autonomously in orbit. Its two flagship products are the Mission Design Simulator (MDS), a high-fidelity virtual environment for prototyping and testing entire space missions in real-time, and the RPO Kit, a COTS plug-and-play spacecraft payload that uses vision-based navigation to autonomously perform complex rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO) with docking accuracy of ≤4 mm and ≤0.5°.
The company has developed its technology in close collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), completing multiple ESA contracts to mature both the MDS and RPO Kit. The RPO Kit has been advanced to Technology Readiness Level 5 (TRL5) under ESA's General Support Technology Programme and is being matured to TRL6 under a €600k ESA contract awarded in early 2026. Blackswan's VBN system combines machine-learning techniques with marker-based methods, leveraging NVIDIA computing chips and commercial optical sensors.
The company serves commercial and institutional customers in both the EU and the US, including Auria Space, and has been selected by Orbit Fab to supply the RPO Kit for ASTRAL—the first European in-space refuelling mission backed by up to €3.3M from the UK Space Agency and ESA, planned for 2028. In July 2026, Blackswan was also selected as a partner in the European Defence Fund (EDF) ASIMOV programme, a €57.3M initiative led by Leonardo to establish Europe's first dual-use On-Orbit Servicing System of Systems. The company has grown to a team of approximately 25 people across Vilnius, London, and Denver.
