About

Blykalla is a Swedish deep-tech company developing and building lead-cooled small modular reactors (SMRs) for safe, scalable, carbon-free baseload power. Spun out of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm in 2013, it is commercializing its SEALER reactor, rated at about 55 MWe per unit, designed to be serially produced in factories and co-located with data centers and energy-intensive industry.

The core technology is a self-healing, aluminum-alloyed steel that resists corrosion by liquid lead. The company says this materials breakthrough, built on more than 25 years of research, makes lead cooling commercially viable, since lead-cooled reactors have been used in submarines since the 1960s. Blykalla reports more than 19,000 hours of testing in molten lead and ten patents.

Blykalla is building an Advanced Reactor Testing Site (ARTS) in Oskarshamn, Sweden, with partners including Uniper, KSB, ABB and NCC. It has submitted applications to the Swedish government for commercial reactor parks in Norrsundet and Tierp, and it has partnerships with Oklo, newcleo, Norsk Kjernekraft, ABB, ESAB, Höganäs and Bodycote, along with data center work with evroc and Studsvik.

Blykalla has raised more than $100M across seed, Series A and later rounds from backers including Norrsken Launcher, Armada, Oklo, KDDI and the EIC Accelerator.
