About
Breye Therapeutics ApS is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company based in Hørsholm, Denmark, founded in 2019. It develops orally administered small-molecule therapies for retinal vascular diseases, with a focus on diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The company emerged from stealth in November 2022 after closing a €4 million seed round led by Novo Holdings and Sound Bioventures, and Ulrik Mouritzen, a physician with more than 20 years of R&D experience, was appointed CEO.
Its lead asset, danegaptide, is an oral small molecule in-licensed from Zealand Pharma and designed to stabilise the retinal vasculature against capillary breakdown and leakage caused by chronically high blood glucose. A Phase 1b trial in 24 patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) and mild centre-involved macular oedema was completed in 2025, and a paper in Science Translational Medicine published in September 2026 reported no serious adverse events related to oral danegaptide. A randomised Phase 2 trial in NPDR is due to start in 2027. The pipeline also includes a P2X7 receptor antagonist for intermediate AMD and glaucoma candidates, both progressing toward IND-enabling studies.
In September 2026 Breye closed an over-subscribed €67.5 million Series A co-led by Mission BioCapital and Novo Holdings, with participation from Sound Bioventures and new investors including the Ljungström family office, Innovestor Life Science, EIFO, Catalyze Capital, Modi Ventures and Pappas Capital. Robert Blazej of Mission BioCapital and Lukas Ljungström joined the board alongside the financing. The proceeds are earmarked for the danegaptide Phase 2 trial and for maturing the wider retinal pipeline.
