About
CamGraPhIC (Cambridge Graphene Photonic Integrated Circuits) is a deep-tech spinout founded in 2018 from the University of Cambridge and Italian research institute CNIT. The company designs, develops, and manufactures next-generation graphene-based photonic integrated circuits for telecoms, datacom, and AI infrastructure. Its core product is a graphene photonic transceiver that delivers up to 80% lower energy consumption, higher bandwidth density, and broader temperature operating range compared to conventional silicon photonics — eliminating the need for complex cooling systems.
The technology integrates ultra-high-quality graphene modulators and photodetectors into silicon photonic chips, enabling a single-platform design compatible with commercial semiconductor foundries across the O, C, and L wavelength bands. Initial target markets include AI GPU-to-HBM interconnects and high-performance computing, with planned expansion into avionics, automotive ADAS, and space applications. CamGraPhIC exclusively manages the Inphotec advanced fabrication infrastructure in Pisa, and is establishing a pilot manufacturing line near Milan, expected to be operational by 2028.
CamGraPhIC is a wholly owned subsidiary of 2D Photonics SpA, the group holding company formed during its 2025 Series A round. The company has attracted backing from NATO Innovation Fund, CDP Venture Capital, Sony Innovation Fund, Bosch Ventures, Join Capital, Frontier IP Group, and Indaco Venture Partners, and received European Commission approval for a €211 million Italian state grant in April 2026 — one of the largest single public investments ever made in an Italian deep-tech startup. The project is expected to create over 150 highly skilled jobs in photonics, materials science, and semiconductor manufacturing.
