Biofabricated cellulose replacing petrochemicals

Fields

About

Cellugy is a Danish industrial biotechnology startup founded in 2018 and headquartered in Søborg, Denmark. The company has developed EcoFLEXY, a first-of-its-kind biofabricated powder cellulose produced via the microbial fermentation of surplus sugar. EcoFLEXY is a fully bio-based, biodegradable, and high-performance alternative to fossil-derived petrochemicals such as carbomers and synthetic rheology modifiers, targeting the personal care, cosmetics, and packaging industries.

Cellugy's proprietary platform technology harnesses cellulose-producing bacteria to yield high-purity, crystalline nanocellulose with a CO₂ footprint at least 80% lower than conventional fossil-based counterparts. The material is a drop-in solution that is compatible with existing manufacturing infrastructure, making it highly attractive for brand formulators seeking sustainability without disrupting their production lines. The company's first product launched commercially in early 2025 in a premium skincare cream developed in collaboration with biotech skincare brand Bioli.

The company has raised over €13M in combined equity and grant funding from investors and bodies including ICIG Ventures, Unconventional Ventures, Joyance Partners, PSV DeepTech, The Footprint Firm, EIFO, Novo Nordisk BioInnovation Institute, Sky Ocean Ventures, and the European Innovation Council. In June 2025, Cellugy secured €8.1M from the EU LIFE Programme under the BIOCARE4LIFE project to scale production and drive commercialisation over a four-year period, targeting the prevention of over 1,200 tonnes of microplastic release annually by 2034. The company's diverse team of approximately 13 people represents nine nationalities and is majority female-led.
