Ceramic-on-glass archival data storage

About

Cerabyte is a Munich-headquartered deep-tech company developing ceramic-based data storage for archival, or cold, data. Its technology uses femtosecond laser pulses to write data into ceramic nanolayers, about 50 to 100 atoms thick, deposited on thin glass substrates. The resulting media is immutable, requires no energy to retain data, is recyclable, and is designed to eliminate periodic media replacement, data migration and climate control. The technology traces back to Ceramic Data Solutions, founded in 2012, which grew out of the Memory of Mankind project.

Cerabyte targets hyperscale and service providers, regulated and high-liability sectors such as banking, insurance and government, and science and heritage archives. Its roadmap projects racks of 1 PB and then 5 PB, rising to more than 100 PB per rack by 2030, with read and write speeds above 1 GB/s. Its prototype is built with standard parts and delivers gigabyte-scale capacity. The company was founded in 2022 by Christian Pflaum, Martin Kunze and Alexander Pflaum, and has offices in Vienna, Gmunden, Santa Clara and Boulder, Colorado. Steven Campbell joined as CTO in August 2024. Cerabyte became an official CERN openlab member in 2024 and joined the Active Archive Alliance that year.

The company has raised around $7.7 million in total. Its funding includes a 2022 seed round of about €6.5 million led by Daniel Aegerter, a 2024 EIC Accelerator grant from the European Innovation Council, and strategic investments from Pure Storage (July 2024, with John Colgrove joining the board), In-Q-Tel (March 2025) and Western Digital (May 2025). Western Digital's investment was described as the basis for a planned technology partnership to commercialize the technology.
