About
ClearSpace is an in-orbit servicing company founded in 2018 as a spin-off from the EPFL Space Center. The company is headquartered in Luxembourg and has offices in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. It develops servicing spacecraft for satellite inspection, life extension and debris removal, with the aim of enabling a circular space economy. Its technologies are described as dual-use, supporting both institutional and commercial customers.
Its flagship programme is ClearSpace-1, an active debris removal mission commissioned by the European Space Agency to capture and deorbit the PROBA-1 satellite. The company is also developing Phoenix, a geostationary life-extension mission for which ESA signed a development contract in September 2026, and PRELUDE, a mission led with ESA to validate rendezvous, proximity operations and capture technologies ahead of a planned 2027 launch. In October 2026 ClearSpace was selected as prime contractor for the UK Active Debris Removal mission, valued at about £61 million, which will remove two UK-registered satellites from low Earth orbit. Earlier UK work included the CLEAR mission, which completed a second phase in 2025.
The company has partnered with Intelsat on satellite life extension, announced in 2022, and with Orbit Fab on in-space refuelling, announced in 2024. It signed a memorandum of understanding with Shield Space in June 2026. Industrial partners on the CLEAR mission include Critical Software, Indra-Deimos, Plextek and Spirit AeroSystems. ClearSpace raised a €26.7 million Series A led by OTB Ventures and Swisscom Ventures in January 2023, and has also received grants from the UK Space Agency and UK government.
