About
Cubbit is an Italian company based in Bologna that develops geo-distributed cloud storage software. Its DS3 Composer product lets enterprises and service providers build their own S3-compatible object storage networks across chosen locations, on existing infrastructure, in the cloud or at the edge. Its DS3 Cloud offering provides ready-to-use geo-redundant object storage hosted in certified partner data centres. Data is encrypted, fragmented and replicated across sites, which the company presents as a way to avoid hyperscaler lock-in, improve resilience against ransomware and disasters, and reduce storage costs by up to 80%.
The company was founded in 2016 by Stefano Onofri, Alessandro Cillario, Marco Moschettini and Lorenzo Posani, initially as a peer-to-peer distributed cloud project that used idle resources in homes and offices. It later moved to a data-centre-based geo-distributed S3 model. Its customers include service providers, system integrators, healthcare organisations, public administrations, media companies, and defence and aerospace organisations, with Leonardo, HPE, Equinix and Exclusive Networks cited as partners. Cubbit reports more than 400 organisations served.
Cubbit has expanded through partnerships with European cloud providers and integrators, including WIIT, Rai Way, HERABIT, Worldstream, Ailanto and GigaCloud, and with data protection vendor Commvault. Its stated focus is European data sovereignty, with growth in DACH, French-speaking Europe and the UK following its 2024 funding round.
