About

CuspAI is a Cambridge-based deep-tech startup founded in 2024 by Dr. Chad Edwards and Prof. Max Welling to build the AI system for materials discovery. Its proprietary agentic AI platform, MIRA, orchestrates the full discovery cycle — from generative materials design and molecular simulation through synthesis route planning and coordinated experimental validation — compressing what traditionally takes decades of lab work into months. The company has secured exclusive AI training rights to the Cambridge Structural Database and the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database, alongside licensed access to major materials science publishers, giving it what it describes as the largest curated experimental materials datasets in the world.

In July 2026, CuspAI launched the AI Materials Foundry, a global network of over 45 founding partners — including NVIDIA, Meta, Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor Group, Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, Henkel, and imec — combining compute infrastructure, laboratory networks, and scientific expertise on a single platform. NVIDIA provides accelerated computing infrastructure, while Meta's Fundamental AI Research Team contributes the Universal Model for Atoms (UMA), a frontier atomistic chemistry model. The foundry targets three primary domains: semiconductor and electronic materials, clean energy (including carbon capture and next-generation batteries), and advanced manufacturing.

CuspAI's advisory board includes AI pioneers Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun, along with Martin van den Brink (former President and CTO of ASML) and Abhi Talwalkar (AMD board member and chair of Lam Research). John Giannandrea, former SVP of Machine Learning at Apple and head of AI research at Google, has joined part-time to lead US foundry operations. The company operates globally from hubs in Cambridge, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tokyo, Singapore, and the United States, and has grown to approximately 80–120 employees following its Series B close.
