About

The Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford is a unified engineering department that teaches and researches all the major branches of engineering. It offers accredited undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including the MEng in Engineering Science, and research degrees (MSc(R), DEng and DPhil). Its research portfolio is directed by the application of cutting-edge science to generate new technology, combining theory and experiment, and includes much work directly supported by industry. The department has especially strong links with computing, materials science and medicine.

The department was founded in 1908 and houses five institutes: the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, the Oxford e-Research Centre, the Oxford Robotics Institute, the Oxford Thermofluids Institute, and the Podium Institute, alongside the ZERO Institute. Research areas include robotics and autonomous systems, biomedical engineering, energy and the environment, building energy simulation, battery research, materials and turbulence modelling, aerospace and hydrogen-powered flight, and quantum and synthetic biology.

The department has spun out more than 45 companies since the 1970s, including OrganOx, Oxbotica and OXCCU, and works with industry partners such as AtkinsRéalis, ConnectionAI, Terumo and Bboxx. Recent recognitions include the 2025 MacRobert Award for OrganOx, a 2026 Faraday Institution Innovation Award for battery research and a 2026 GPPS Best Paper Award for turbomachinery cooling research.
