About
Distalmotion is a Swiss medtech company headquartered in Épalinges near Lausanne. It was founded in 2012 as a spin-off from the Robotics Lab of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) by Ricardo Beira and Lionel Flaction. Its main product is DEXTER, a soft tissue robotic surgery system built around wristed, single-use robotic instruments, a compact mobile footprint and an open architecture that integrates with third-party imaging and operating room equipment. DEXTER uses a surgeon-controlled design that keeps the surgeon in the sterile field and combines robotic and laparoscopic workflows.
DEXTER received CE mark in 2020 for urology, gynecology and general surgery, and performed its first clinical cases in 2021. It surpassed 1,000 procedures in Europe by 2024. The system received FDA De Novo marketing authorization in October 2024 and was first used in US outpatient procedures later that year. Subsequent FDA 510(k) clearances in 2025 and 2026 covered cholecystectomy, benign hysterectomy, sacrocolpopexy, sacrocervicopexy, sacrohysteropexy, endometriosis resection and ventral hernia repair. The company reported that DEXTER had treated roughly 3,000 patients across Europe and the US by late 2025.
Distalmotion targets the US ambulatory surgery center and hospital outpatient markets. Its first US sale was to Memorial Hermann Health System in early 2025, its first ASC sale was to Northtowns Ambulatory Surgery Center in March 2025, and in June 2025 it completed a multi-robot sale to AdventHealth. In September 2025 it launched a financing program with First Citizens Bank for US customers. The company has raised more than $390 million, with its largest rounds led by Revival Healthcare Capital, and it added Johnson & Johnson Innovation (JJDC) as a strategic investor in January 2026. Greg Roche became CEO in late 2023 and Chas McKhann was named Executive Chairman in November 2025.
