Perception software for off-road autonomy

About

driveblocks GmbH is a Munich-based software and AI company developing modular autonomy and perception software for off-road ground vehicles. Its software fuses camera and LiDAR data into a real-time three-dimensional model of the surroundings, using pre-trained machine-learning models combined with explicit algorithms to assess terrain geometry, detect obstacles and people, evaluate drivability, and generate local avoidance behaviour. The stack is designed to work without high-definition maps or lanes and can run standalone or as a redundant extension to an existing GNSS-based autonomy system.

The company was founded in 2022 by Alexander Wischnewski, Stephan Matz, Leonhard Hermansdorfer, Thomas Herrmann, Tim Stahl and Felix Nobis, who met at the Chair of Automotive Engineering at TU München and had developed autonomous driving software for the Indy Autonomous Challenge. It focuses on agriculture, construction and mining, and defense, offering software and AI models that OEMs and system integrators can integrate into their own vehicle architectures, with the company providing integration and system build-up support when needed. Its platform is designed to run on production hardware, work with industrial-grade sensors and support a range of AI accelerators, and it is being developed with safety certification in mind.

driveblocks has worked with several industry partners. It pre-integrated its Mapless Autonomy Platform with the Apex.Grace safety-certified software framework from Apex.AI in 2023, and in 2024 it integrated its platform into TIER IV's autonomous driving software for mapless highway trucking. In 2025 it co-developed an AI assistance system for mobile machinery with STW and, together with Apex.AI, SYSGO and STW, introduced a pre-integrated software and hardware platform for off-road applications. It is also working with Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles on autonomous convoy capabilities for the German Armed Forces within the InterRoC VII research project. The company has raised roughly €7.5M in total funding and is pursuing first production deployments with OEMs and system integrators.
