About
Echolight is a medical technology company based in Lecce, Italy, that develops radiation-free bone health assessment devices. It was founded in 2010 as a spin-off of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and is built around its proprietary Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry (REMS) technology, marketed through the EchoS portable bone densitometer and the EchoStation system. REMS uses ultrasound signals to measure bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, along with bone microarchitecture, to support early diagnosis, prevention and monitoring of osteoporosis and fracture risk without ionizing radiation and without the need for a certified operator. The device is FDA-cleared and carries CE marking, ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 certifications.
The company sells through a network of more than 40 distributors and has several hundred customers worldwide. It opened a US office in 2020, with its US headquarters in Seattle at launch, and appointed a Chief Commercial Officer and North America General Manager in January 2025. Its agreements include a 2021 multi-year contracted pricing award with Vizient, a 2022 co-marketing agreement with Aurora Spine, and a 2024 agreement with Siemens Healthineers to resell its densitometers in support of women's health solutions. NASA has used REMS to monitor bone changes in a human bedrest study. A CPT code for REMS bone assessment in the United States became applicable from January 2024, and an Italian Ministry of Health decree of August 2026 introduced two REMS-based services into the national healthcare nomenclature.
Echolight has raised around EUR 4M in total funding, including a 2016 Series A co-led by Panakes Partners and Invitalia Ventures, following earlier seed financing from Life Sciences Capital. It has also received an EIT Health support grant. Its founding team includes CEO Sergio Casciaro, co-founder Francesco Conversano, who serves as CTO, and co-founder Matteo Pernisa.
