About

Epigenica AB is a Solna, Sweden-based life sciences company founded in 2020 that develops tools for epigenetic analysis. The company was formed after a large pharmaceutical company approached Simon Elsässer, then an Assistant Professor at Karolinska Institutet, to find or build a technology capable of generating quantitative epigenetic data at scale. Co-founder Mohamad Takwa, an entrepreneur and scientist, joined him to commercialize the chip-based technology.

The core EpiFinder platform uses patented high-throughput, multiplex, quantitative ChIP-seq technology (hmqChIP) to profile multiple histone modifications and DNA methylation marks across many samples at once, with low amounts of input material. The EpiFinder GenomePro kit targets up to 8 epigenetic markers in up to 24 samples and was first launched as a commercial kit in June 2024, with a formal launch in September 2025. EpiFinder cNUC, launched in February 2026, profiles histone marks and DNA methylation directly from circulating nucleosomes in plasma and serum. An EpiFinder Analysis Service launched in January 2026, and an EpiFinder Global product is under development. Target applications include drug discovery and development, biomarker discovery, precision medicine, oncology and longevity research.

Almi Invest and Scale Up Life Science Invest invested in 2023. In June 2025 the company closed a $2.2 million (SEK 21.5M) round led by Voima Ventures, with participation from Navigare Ventures, Leksell Social Ventures and Almi Invest, to fund commercialization, its service business and entry into the US market. In September 2025 it was awarded a SEK 5 million Eurostars grant for a liquid biopsy multi-cancer detection project with MTG Research and Development Lab and AD-ABC. In 2026 the company signed a distribution agreement with PrimeTech in Japan and an agreement with National Genomics Infrastructure in Stockholm, which became the first certified core lab and service provider for its EpiFinder platform.
