About

Fieldwork Robotics is a Cambridge-based developer of soft, selective and autonomous harvesting robots for soft fruit, starting with raspberries. The company was spun out of the University of Plymouth in 2016 from the research of Dr. Martin Stoelen on soft and modular robots for horticulture. Its robots use four picking arms, AI-enhanced 3D cameras, sensors and machine learning to pick fruit at a speed and quality comparable to human pickers, and the company says the platform is adaptive and modular, with the aim of reducing the harvesting cost per berry.

The company's first robot, Alpha, was developed in collaboration with Bosch and was deployed on farms in Portugal with the Summer Berry Company, with fruit sold through UK supermarkets including M&S, Sainsbury's and Waitrose. In 2024 it launched the Fieldworker 1, a new model that was reported to be able to harvest day and night. Fieldwork has also partnered with Burro on a base-agnostic payload, with Dynium on autonomous base platforms for polytunnels, and with Place UK on a two-year harvesting-as-a-service programme in Norfolk. Trials in Portugal and Australia are planned, and multi-robot fleets are expected on farms from 2027.

Fieldwork targets the berry market, citing a raspberry market of about £2.6bn and estimates that up to 30% of soft fruit crops can be left unpicked because of labour shortages. The company has received grants from Innovate UK, DEFRA and UKRI, and ReFED, and in 2026 moved from technology validation into a scale-up phase, with a £2.2 million equity round led by Elbow Beach Capital and a further Seed+ investment from SEED Innovations. It has offices in Cambridge, Porto Salvo in Portugal and Queensland in Australia.
