About
Formo Bio GmbH is a Berlin-based food biotech company, founded in 2019 as LegenDairy Foods by Raffael Wohlgensinger and Dr. Britta Winterberg. The company develops animal-free dairy products using micro-fermentation and precision fermentation, producing identical or nature-identical milk proteins such as caseins with specialized microorganisms. Its micro-fermentation line uses Koji protein from the fungus Aspergillus oryzae to make cheese alternatives, including the Frischhain cream cheese and Camembritz, which have been sold at REWE, METRO and BILLA stores in Germany and Austria since September 2024.
Formo is also developing precision-fermented caseins and egg alternatives. In March 2024 it formed an R&D and manufacturing partnership with Belgian company Those Vegan Cowboys to industrialise precision-fermented casein. In 2026 its recombinant alpha-S1-casein was reported to have obtained self-affirmed GRAS status and entered active FDA GRAS review together with Those Vegan Cowboys.
The company has raised a Series A of about €42 million in 2021 led by EQT Ventures, and a $61 million Series B in September 2024 with investors including Foodlabs, EQT Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, REWE Group, SevenVentures and The Nature Conservancy. In January 2025 it secured a €35 million venture debt loan from the European Investment Bank. Its investors include Agronomics, which first invested in its seed round in 2019.
