About

Fusion Bionic GmbH is a Dresden-based company that develops laser-based surface functionalization using Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP), a method that embeds bio-inspired micro- and nanostructures directly into material surfaces in a single process without vacuum, cleanroom or additional chemicals. The technology draws on natural surfaces such as lotus leaves, shark skin, moth eyes and collembola to create effects including self-cleaning, anti-icing, antibacterial behavior, reduced friction, wettability control, decoration and light steering. The company was founded in April 2021 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS, building on roughly a decade of DLIP research at Fraunhofer IWS and the Technische Universität Dresden.

The product line includes the CORE series of modular, software-configurable interference modules for wavelengths from IR to UV and structure sizes from 0.5 to 12 µm, the scanner-based CORErapid series for high-speed processing with structure sizes from 1.5 to 30 µm, and the COREultra series, which was listed as coming soon. The company also offers consulting, process development, integration into production lines, joint R&D, training and engineering and manufacturing services. Target applications include aerospace (anti-icing), automotive (friction and wear reduction and contact resistance of electrical connectors), medical technology (implant biocompatibility and antibacterial surfaces) and, from 2026, photovoltaics, semiconductors and consumer electronics. Partners and customers include Heraeus Precious Metals, GFH GmbH and SLV Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The company has ongoing customer projects in Asia and a cooperation with MOL Solutions Inc. In 2024 it worked with Amphico on LaserTex, a PFAS-free textile material.

In June 2026 the company closed a seed round of €5.8 million led by Stream Capital, with TGFS, MBG and SBG participating. Together with €2.4 million from two industrial projects for solar glass functionalization and machine solutions, total funding for its next growth phase reached €8.2 million. An earlier seed round closed in September 2021, led by Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen (TGFS) with the Fraunhofer Technology Transfer Fund and Avantgarde Labs Ventures. In February 2025 the company received the Fraunhofer Founder Award 2024, endowed with €50,000.
