About
GATE Space is a Vienna-based aerospace company that develops high-thrust chemical propulsion systems for satellites, capsules and landing vehicles. Its patented rocket engines run on green, regulation-compliant propellants and power the GATE Jetpack, a plug-and-play propulsion unit for ESPA-class satellites weighing between 50 and 500 kilograms. The system enables orbit adjustment, collision avoidance, docking with other spacecraft and safe deorbiting. The company has completed more than 8,000 hot-fire tests across atmospheric and vacuum conditions and operates a 560 square metre production facility and a vacuum test site near Vienna Airport.
The company was founded in 2022 by graduates of the TU Wien Space Team student rocketry group and has about 30 employees across Austria, Germany and the United States. Its first in-orbit flight is scheduled for February 2027 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 as part of BEACONSAT, Austria's first military satellite, which is designed to detect jamming and spoofing of navigation signals. GATE Space holds four contracts with the European Space Agency and has signed additional confidential customer missions for 2027 and beyond.
In June 2026 the company was selected for €6.3 million in blended grant and equity financing under the EIC Accelerator, with the equity routed through the European Investment Bank. It was the only space, aerospace or defence company selected in that round. Earlier funding included a 2022 angel round, a 2023 Techstars convertible and a 2025 round led by ROI Ventures, bringing total funding to about €10 million before the EIC award. The proceeds are earmarked for industrialising the propulsion technology and expanding production capacity.
Moritz Novak led the company as chief executive officer until mid-2026, when Fabian Duschel took over as chief executive officer and Novak moved to chairman of the board and chief strategy officer. Clemens Weisgram serves as chief financial officer, Alexander Sebo as chief technology officer and Taras Weinl as chief operating officer.
