About
Golbriak Space is an Estonian space-tech company developing miniaturised free-space optical (laser) communication terminals for small satellites, CubeSats, and airborne platforms. Its flagship ERMES terminal (2U, from 1.2 kg) enables data rates of up to 2.5 Gbps across link distances exceeding 10,000 km in low Earth orbit, with no ITU frequency-coordination or licensing requirements. The company also offers ARES, an airborne optical terminal, and a Service Downlink offering starting from €18/min at 1 Gbps.
Founded in 2017 by PhD researchers Nicola Garzaniti and Simone Briatore following their win of the Copernicus Masters award, Golbriak was among the first startups admitted to ESA Business Incubation Centre Estonia. The company delivered optical inter-satellite link payloads for the ESA-funded FSSCat mission (launched September 2020), achieving in-orbit validation of key components. It has since co-developed MilCam with Space IT and is collaborating with Spaceit and C3S on Estonia's first commercial satellite under ESA's OPS-SAT ORIOLE programme.
Golbriak's optical terminals are AI-enabled and support sandboxing, virtual missions, and third-party ML/deep-learning algorithms running directly on the data hub. The technology is resistant to jamming, spoofing, and tapping due to the high directionality of the laser beam. As of late 2026 the company is in advanced commercial negotiations for programmes collectively involving several thousand terminal units, with customer-funded deployments planned from 2027.
Operating as Golbriak Space OÜ in Tallinn (with Italian holding entity Iribits S.r.l.), the company closed its first institutional seed round of €4 million in October 2026 and is relocating to expanded office and production facilities in Tallinn's Mustamäe district to support serial manufacturing scale-up.
