AI drug discovery for rare diseases

About

Healx is a Cambridge, UK biotech that uses AI to discover new treatments for rare diseases, of which more than 10,000 are known, affecting about 400 million people, with only about 5% having an approved treatment. Its platform builds a biomedical knowledge graph from public and proprietary sources, including literature, disease and biochemical datasets, clinical trials and patents, to find connections between existing compounds and rare diseases. The company pursues drug redevelopment, using existing drugs for new therapeutic purposes, combined with AI.

Healx was founded in 2014 by Tim Guilliams and David Brown, co-inventor of Viagra and former global head of drug discovery at Roche. It was formerly known as Healx3. Its lead program, HLX-1502, is for neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1); the FDA cleared its IND for a Phase 2 trial in 2024, with the trial expected to start by the end of that year. The company says it has over 20 other assets in its pipeline across rare oncology, renal and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Healx has raised about $115M in total, including a $47M Series C in August 2024 co-led by R42 Group and Atomico, and a $56M Series B in 2019 led by Atomico.
