Electrospray propulsion for small satellites

About

IENAI Space is a Spanish space mobility company based in Leganés, near Madrid, that develops electric propulsion hardware and mission analysis software for small satellites. Its main product is ATHENA, a compact electrospray thruster family available in PICO and NANO models, with a MICRO model in development. The thrusters are based on a proprietary ionic-liquid electrospray technology and are designed for orbit correction, life extension, deorbiting, constellation deployment and collision avoidance.

The company also offers 360, a software suite for mission and space mobility analysis that supports flight dynamics, attitude dynamics, subsystem digital twins and propulsive optimization, and ORBITAL, a propulsive operations management suite announced as coming soon. The company has also announced ISPTECH, a German firm, as a partner on a multi-mode propulsion system combining electric and chemical propulsion for defence and commercial missions.

In 2024 ATHENA fired for almost 400 hours during a preliminary design review with the European Space Agency, which was described as the longest firing of an ionic-liquid electrospray thruster in Europe. The company reported requests for quotes from European satellite manufacturers and a beta test of 360 with around 30 companies. In 2025 and 2026 it received public funding for industrialization projects, and an ATHENA NANO unit flew on a 6U satellite built by FOSSA Systems that launched in October 2026 on a Falcon 9 Bandwagon-5 mission.
