About
Monumental designs, builds, and operates a fleet of autonomous electric robots that perform bricklaying on live construction sites across the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Founded in Amsterdam in 2021 by Salar al Khafaji and Sebastiaan Visser — who previously co-founded Silk (acquired by Palantir in 2016) — the company has developed a vertically integrated product combining its own robot hardware, computer vision pipeline, and the Atrium AI software platform that coordinates everything from microcontroller to UI.
Monumental operates as an autonomous subcontractor: contractors commission a finished wall and pay per brick or per square metre, while Monumental owns, deploys, and manages the robotic fleet. The robots use advanced sensors, computer vision, and small on-board cranes to lay brick and mortar with millimetre-level precision. As of mid-2026, the fleet numbers more than 100 robots and has completed work across 40+ projects for 20+ customers, including 100+ homes, a school, a hotel, a community centre, and over 150 m of canal walls.
The company is headquartered in the Plantage neighbourhood of Amsterdam, near the Artis zoo, and employs more than 130 people drawn from organisations including Palantir, DeepMind, Qualcomm, Tesla, Dyson, and Meta. Monumental has raised over $60M in total funding from investors including Khosla Ventures, Plural, Hummingbird, Northzone, Foundamental, and NP-Hard Ventures, and is currently expanding its UK operations and launching its first US pilot projects in Texas, Florida, Virginia, and Arizona.
