About
MotionMiners GmbH is a Dortmund-based company that analyses manual work processes in logistics, production and related industries. It was founded in October 2017 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML) and was built on research by co-founder Sascha Feldhorst at TU Dortmund and Fraunhofer IML into automatic activity recognition for picking processes.
Its Motion-Mining technology uses wearable sensors worn on the wrists and belt, Bluetooth beacons, indoor localisation and machine learning to record and classify worker activities anonymously. The data is processed in the MotionMiners PROCESS INTELLIGENCE (MPI) software, a web-based analytics dashboard that turns measurement data into key performance indicators for productivity and ergonomics. The company offers a licence model for customers who run analyses themselves, project-based analyses, a sensor-based fleet analysis for intralogistics vehicles introduced in 2024, operational data matching that combines process data with company operating data, and an ergonomics training product based on gamification.
MotionMiners reports customers across logistics service providers, retail logistics, production and the automotive industry, and states that it has worked with more than 150 customers. In 2026 it added a Virtual Process Manager feature to MPI that automates the interpretation of key figures. The company is led by its three co-founders and had around 60 employees as of its own published figures.
