About
MuRayTech GmbH is a Hamburg-based deeptech company developing Active Muon Imaging, a non-destructive inspection technology that uses a controlled muon beam to image the interior of dense metal and ceramic parts. Its platform combines laser-plasma-accelerator-driven muon sources, particle detectors and AI-based reconstruction to produce sub-millimetre 3D images in minutes, with about 100 times the penetration depth of X-rays and greater atomic composition sensitivity at a lower radiation dose.
The initial focus is quality and safety assessment of critical components such as 3D-printed rocket engines, gas turbine parts, jet engine parts and large nuclear or industrial systems, with development partners across the energy, defence, aerospace and security industries. Further applications under development include customs and security screening of sealed cargo and medical imaging. A first inspection service is planned for early 2027 at partner facilities such as DESY using an existing electron beam, with a fully self-contained laser-driven system targeted for 2029, and a mobile system housed in a shipping container is also being developed.
The company was founded in 2025 by Andi Hektor and Kristjan Põder, both physicists with backgrounds at DESY and CERN, and operates from Hamburg with engineering work in Tallinn, Estonia. It grew out of DESY and a relationship with the muon tomography company GScan. In November 2025 it closed an initial round of €325K led by Nordic Science Investments. In October 2026 it raised €7.1M in combined funding, comprising a €3.5M private round led by First Momentum Ventures and co-led by Caelora, and €3.6M in public funding including a Horizon Europe grant. In February 2026 it won its first major German contract, worth €1M.
