About

Nami Surgical is a Glasgow-based medtech company developing miniaturised ultrasonic surgical devices for robotic-assisted surgery. Its core product is a patent-protected ultrasonic scalpel whose transducer is miniaturised so that the blade can articulate within wristed robotic instruments while delivering simultaneous cutting and coagulation. The company states that its platform passes through standard 8mm surgical ports and is more than 90% smaller than existing ultrasonic technologies.

Nami was founded in 2021 as a spinout from the University of Glasgow's Centre for Medical and Industrial Ultrasonics by Dr Nico Fenu and Dr Rebecca Cleary, building on Dr Fenu's PhD research on piezoelectric materials for ultrasonic surgery. The company achieved ISO 13485 certification for the design and development of its ultrasonic surgical platform in January 2026, completed a first porcine cadaver study in November 2025 with the University of Edinburgh, and completed a first porcine in vivo study in February 2026. Nami also manufactures in-house at its Hillington headquarters, where it installed a CNC sliding head lathe in 2026.

Nami targets the robotic-assisted surgery market, which it forecasts to exceed $25 billion by 2030, and aims to supply surgical robotics manufacturers and hospitals. Its funding has come from Eos Advisory, the Investment Fund for Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, SIS Ventures, the Scottish National Investment Bank, Innovate UK and other public bodies. Nikki Palfrey became Chief Executive Officer in January 2026, with Nico Fenu moving to Chief Operating Officer, and the company is moving from advanced development toward commercialisation.
