About
Nordic Ren-Gas Oy is a Finnish renewable energy developer founded in 2021 in Espoo. The company builds a distributed network of power-to-gas plants in Finland that produce renewable e-methane from green hydrogen, which is combined with captured biogenic CO2. The e-methane is intended for heavy road transport and maritime shipping, sectors that are difficult to decarbonise, and it can use existing gas infrastructure. Its plants also produce CO2-free district heat from waste heat.
Ren-Gas's development pipeline includes projects in Tampere, Lahti, Kotka, Pori, Mikkeli, Kerava and other Finnish locations, with over 700 MW of electrolysis capacity planned, equivalent to the annual fuel demand of about 7,000 heavy-duty trucks. The Tampere project is described as the most advanced and ready for construction. The company works with local municipal energy companies such as Helen, Tampereen Energia, Pori Energia and Keravan Energia, and has selected technology partners including Sunfire for electrolysers, MAN Energy Solutions for methanation, and Saipem for carbon capture.
The company has signed an offtake agreement with Gasum and a EUR 1 billion e-methane offtake agreement with avanca/Alternoil. It has received a EUR 45 million grant through the European Hydrogen Bank's first auction, a EUR 42 million EU Innovation Fund grant for its Kotka project, and a EUR 28 million energy investment grant for Lahti. Its shareholders include Allianz Capital Partners, Suomen Tavara ja Raha, Taaleri and Tesi.
