About
Optics11 is an Amsterdam-based deeptech scale-up and world leader in fibre-optic sensing technology, specialising in ultra-sensitive interferometric systems for the harshest environments. Founded in 2011 as a spin-off from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the company has grown to more than 120 specialists across 32 nationalities, with a strong patent portfolio in passive fibre-optic acoustic and vibration sensing.
The company operates across two core verticals: Underwater Security and Energy. In underwater security, Optics11 offers OptiBarrier (a seabed hydrophone curtain providing over-the-horizon threat detection), OptiArray (a towed fibre-optic array for submarines and uncrewed vessels), and containerised anti-submarine warfare systems. In energy, its OptiFinder platform provides real-time partial discharge monitoring and localisation for high-voltage transformers, cable joints, and switchgear, extending asset lifetimes and preventing failures.
Customers include the Dutch Ministry of Defence, the Royal Netherlands Navy, and major industrial players such as Airbus and Sony. The company has secured significant contracts including the ASWINABO (Anti-Submarine Warfare In A Box) programme for the Royal Netherlands Navy, and is involved in Europe's largest fusion reactor project. Optics11's technology is entirely passive and immune to electromagnetic interference, giving it decisive advantages in defense and critical infrastructure applications.
Optics11 has raised over €42 million in combined equity and venture debt funding, including a €17 million Series B in 2025 led by FORWARD.one and SET Ventures, and a €25 million venture debt facility from the European Investment Bank in 2026. The company is rapidly scaling its solutions across Europe to address growing threats to energy grids and undersea infrastructure.
