About

OQ Technology is a Luxembourg-based satellite operator that develops 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connectivity through a low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation for direct-to-device (D2D) and IoT services. The company holds MSS S-band spectrum rights and is described as the first company in Europe to operate a LEO constellation dedicated to D2D services. Its technology is designed to connect standard, unmodified smartphones and IoT devices to satellites and to be 3GPP Release 17 compliant.

The company was founded in 2016 by engineer Omar Qaise and first deployed satellites in 2019, reportedly the first satellite operator to demonstrate a cellular IoT connection from space. In 2025 it demonstrated a direct-to-device emergency broadcast message to unmodified smartphones, and in July 2025 it transmitted an image via a 5G NTN IoT link from a LEO satellite. Its products serve sectors including energy and utilities, maritime, mining, logistics, agriculture, security, and government and defense, with customers and partners including Aramco, Telefonica (o2 Telefonica and Telefonica Germany), Deutsche Telekom IoT, Transatel, KPN and Eseye.

OQ Technology has raised more than 50 million euros in disclosed funding, including a 13 million euro Series A in 2022 led by Wa'ed Ventures and Phaistos Investment Fund, a Series B in 2024 with participation from SES, the Government of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Space Sector Development fund, a 2.5 million euro European Innovation Council grant, and a 25 million euro venture debt facility from the European Investment Bank in February 2026. The company plans to expand its constellation to 30 satellites and eventually 100, and to offer two-way messaging and voice services direct to smartphones.
