About
ORCA Computing is a British company that develops photonic quantum computers, which use single photons as qubits and operate at room temperature using largely standard telecommunications components. The company was founded in 2019 as a spin-out from the University of Oxford and is headquartered in London, with an office in Austin, Texas and staff in Canada, Poland and the United States. Its PT Series systems are designed to integrate with existing data centres, GPUs and developer tools such as Python, PyTorch and NVIDIA CUDA-Q, and the company positions them for hybrid quantum-classical generative AI and optimisation workloads.
ORCA's systems have been deployed at the UK Ministry of Defence, the UK National Quantum Computing Centre, Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center in Poland, and Montana State University in the United States. In 2024 it acquired the integrated photonics division of GXC. The company has partnered with bp on generative adversarial network approaches to molecular conformation, and with Vodafone, Toyota Tsusho, Airbus and others on industrial use cases. In 2026 it launched the PT-3, which it describes as the first quantum computer to demonstrate commercial quantum advantage on a hybrid quantum-classical generative AI application, with its first system installed at Digital Realty's Innovation Lab in London.
ORCA has raised funding from investors including Octopus Ventures, Oxford Science Enterprises, Quantonation, Verve Ventures, Atmos Ventures, Temasek, Baillie Gifford, NVentures, QIA and Morgan Stanley, alongside Innovate UK grants. Its PT-1, PT-2 and PT-3 generations are part of a roadmap aimed at fault-tolerant, modular photonic quantum computing.
