About
Protium Green Solutions Ltd is a UK green hydrogen company founded in 2019 and headquartered in London. It develops, owns and operates green hydrogen and renewable energy infrastructure, and produces, stores, supplies and distributes green hydrogen. Its customers include off-grid power users, road, rail, maritime and aviation transport operators, industrial users such as steel, glass and food and drink producers, and construction sites. Its commercial model is a Hydrogen Energy Services Company (HESCO) structure that packages multiple infrastructure assets together to decarbonise heat, power and transport demand.
The company operates Pioneer 1, its first operational green hydrogen hub, and Pioneer 2 in South Wales, which reached first gas in May 2026 and produces up to one tonne of green hydrogen per day. Its project portfolio is described as more than 250MW of green hydrogen projects, including a flagship project in Magor, South Wales with Budweiser. Protium acquired the Storegga Scottish portfolio in May 2026, including the 15MW Cromarty Green Hydrogen Production Facility in the Scottish Highlands, and Highland Council granted planning permission for the Cromarty plant in August 2026. In June 2026 Protium added a distribution hub at Dunsfold Park, Surrey, as part of what it describes as the UK's largest green hydrogen distribution network.
Protium has commercial and partnership activity including a strategic partnership with electrolyser maker ITM Power, announced in June 2026, to co-develop and operate industrial-scale plants starting with Cromarty; a supply agreement with H-Power for 5,000 kg of green hydrogen produced from cracked ammonia; a memorandum of understanding with Rux Energy on hydrogen storage, announced in October 2026; and a memorandum of understanding with ULEMCo on transport demand. It supplied green hydrogen to the OX1 sustainable aviation fuel pilot of OXCCU at London Oxford Airport, supplied a Wales and West Utilities light commercial vehicle trial with Ford in 2026, and signed a contract with Fuel Cell Systems for a HyHAUL refuelling station able to refuel up to 30 heavy goods vehicles a day. AVEVA was selected as the foundation of its digital industrial intelligence platform.
Protium raised £40.5M in a Series A in 2022, led by SWEN Capital Partners with Barclays participating, and a Series B of over £31M in January 2025, led by Barclays Principal Investments and SWEN Capital Partners with new investment from ITOCHU Corporation and Toho Gas.
