About
Purespring Therapeutics is a London-based precision nephrology company developing podocyte-targeted genetic therapies intended to preserve kidney function. It was established in 2020 by Syncona, a life science investor, and is built on research by Professor Moin Saleem of the University of Bristol, a specialist in paediatric renal medicine. The company is a University of Bristol spinout.
Its proprietary GlomThera platform uses adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors to deliver gene replacement or gene augmentation therapies locally to podocytes, a specialised kidney cell implicated in approximately 60% of renal diseases. The approach is designed to use lower doses, minimise systemic effects and provide durable efficacy. Its lead programme, PS-002, targets complement activation in IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and entered Phase I/II clinical trials after FDA IND clearance in July 2025 and UK CTA approval in August 2025. The pipeline also includes PS-003, which is advancing toward clinical development in X-linked Alport Syndrome, and a programme targeting nephrotic syndrome.
Purespring raised £80M ($105M) in an oversubscribed Series B round in October 2024, led by Sofinnova Partners with Gilde Healthcare, Forbion, British Patient Capital and Syncona. Haseeb Ahmad, formerly President of Novartis Europe, was appointed Chief Executive Officer in March 2025. The company has collaborations with Charles River Laboratories for plasmid DNA manufacturing, Andelyn Biosciences for gene therapy manufacturing, and Chromatin Bioscience for synthetic promoter research.
