Reversible fuel cell power plants

About

Reverion is a German clean-energy company and TU Munich spin-off developing reversible solid oxide fuel cell (rSOFC) power plants that generate electricity from biogas with up to 80% efficiency—roughly double the performance of conventional systems. Its flagship Reverion M product is a containerised, plug-and-play unit serving biogas plant operators, utilities and data centres, with the ability to switch between power generation and electrolysis modes. The Reverion H system extends the concept to long-duration energy storage via power-to-gas and green hydrogen production, with up to 75% round-trip efficiency.

The technology also enables high-purity CO₂ capture during operation; through a partnership with carbon removal company Frontier, Reverion has committed to permanently removing up to 96,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ between 2027 and 2030. In April 2025 the company set a new world record for thermal power plant electrical efficiency at 74.2%, and its first commercial units entered routine operation at multiple customer sites in early 2025, backed by over $100 million in customer pre-orders.

Founded in 2022 after nearly a decade of research at TUM, Reverion has grown to approximately 220 employees and started serial production at its Eresing site in July 2026. A $175 million Series B closed in September 2026 will fund a new German megafactory targeting 250 MW of annual capacity and up to 800 new jobs, underpinned by a large-volume SOFC stack supply agreement with Doosan Fuel Cell. The company has raised a total of approximately $254 million across four rounds.
