About

Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) is a German NewSpace company founded in 2018 as a corporate spin-off from OHB SE, via MT Aerospace Holding, with the mission of democratizing access to space through affordable, flexible, and precise launch services. Its flagship product is the RFA ONE, a three-stage small launch vehicle approximately 30 m tall capable of delivering up to 500 kg to a 500 km sun-synchronous orbit. The company's proprietary Helix engine is Europe's only staged-combustion rocket engine, burning kerosene and liquid oxygen in an oxygen-rich staged combustion cycle — a technology that delivers a roughly 30% payload advantage over simpler engine cycles used by most competitors.

RFA follows an automotive-style serial production philosophy to maximize cost efficiency, targeting a launch price of approximately €3 million per mission. The Redshift OTV (Orbital Transfer Vehicle) provides a last-mile delivery service capable of deploying payloads precisely anywhere from LEO to GTO and beyond. Following a major first-stage loss during a nine-engine static fire test at SaxaVord Spaceport in August 2024, the company rebuilt and upgraded the vehicle and received its UK Spaceflight Operator Licence in January 2025, becoming the first European company with regulatory approval for orbital rocket launches from the UK.

In August 2026, RFA signed a €186.9 million contract with ESA as one of three winners of the European Launcher Challenge, which requires an orbital launch before 2028 to unlock milestone-based payments. The company has been majority-backed by OHB SE since founding, with additional investment from KKR (€30 million convertible bond, 2023) and grants from Germany, Portugal, and the UK Space Agency through ESA's Boost! programme. RFA employs several hundred people across facilities in Germany, Portugal, Sweden, and Scotland.
