About
Saga Robotics is a Norwegian agricultural robotics company behind Thorvald, a modular autonomous field robot. Thorvald uses UV-C light to treat fungal diseases such as powdery mildew in grapevines and strawberries, typically overnight, as an alternative to synthetic fungicides. While treating crops, the robot's cameras count flowers and fruit and collect ripeness data, which feeds a yield prediction data service sold to growers.
Thorvald originated in 2014 as a Master's project at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Saga Robotics was established in 2016 and matured in close collaboration with UK growers between 2016 and 2020. The company operates with offices in Paso Robles, California, Lincoln and Yalding in the UK, and Oslo, Norway. Its robots are offered on a service and lease model operated by Saga crews.
The company reports a fleet of more than 150 Thorvald robots, over 200,000 autonomous kilometres driven, and 97% robot uptime across commercial operations in the 2025 season. In the UK, Thorvald treated about 20% of the tabletop strawberry market, and in California it treated nearly 1,300 acres of vineyards. Customers and partners include Chambers Farm, WB Chambers Farms, Bien Nacido, Bonterra Organic Estates and Castoro Cellars.
