About

SaxaVord Spaceport is the UK's first fully licensed vertical launch spaceport, located at Lamba Ness on the island of Unst in Shetland. The company says it is one of only two such facilities in Europe and has the capacity to carry out 60% of orbital launches from the continent. Its purpose is to support the launch of small satellites into polar and sun-synchronous orbits. The site received Spaceport and Range licences from the Civil Aviation Authority, with approval for up to 30 launches a year.

The site has one operational launch complex (a launch stool, pad and integration hangar), which is occupied by Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) for its RFA ONE vehicle. Two more complexes are under construction, along with a Mission Management Control Centre. SaxaVord also provides facilities for component testing, development and storage, and a bespoke rocket tracking, telemetry and flight termination system is installed. The company operates an antenna and ground station network, and has said it is working with partners on a global ground station network.

Clients and partners include RFA, HyImpulse (which signed a launch services agreement for the second flight of its SR75 suborbital vehicle in March 2026) and Orbex, which was planning launches from the site. In September 2026 the UK Government announced a £30m investment, subject to due diligence, alongside £30m of planned private investment, to complete three launchpads, mission management infrastructure and a second integration hangar. The company is majority owned by Wild Ventures, linked to Anders Holch Povlsen, and its 2024 accounts disclosed a technical default on a £10m loan.
