About

SEMRON is a Dresden-based semiconductor startup developing CapRAM™, a proprietary 3D-scalable compute-in-memory (CIM) technology that enables large AI models to run directly on edge devices — smartphones, wearables, earbuds, and AR/VR headsets — without relying on cloud infrastructure. Founded in 2020 by engineering graduates of Dresden University of Technology, the company's core innovation uses memcapacitors (variable capacitors) instead of conventional transistors and electrical currents, dramatically reducing energy consumption and heat dissipation.

CapRAM's architecture allows hundreds of computing layers to be stacked on a single chip, delivering up to 3,500 TOPS/watt in AI inference — 35–300x more efficient than competing approaches. This enables GPT-3.5-scale language models to run on a single square centimetre of silicon. The technology is CMOS-compatible and manufacturable through established foundries, lowering the barrier to commercialisation.

SEMRON targets high-volume edge AI markets including smartphones (on-device LLMs and digital assistants), smart earbuds (voice control and live translation), and VR/AR headsets (video processing and generative AI). The company has published peer-reviewed research in Nature Electronics and presented at IEEE conferences, and it maintains offices in both Dresden, Germany and Austin, Texas.
