About
Silvia Bio Ltd is a biotechnology company based in Sheffield, United Kingdom, that develops technology to improve mammalian-cell biomanufacturing. It was incorporated in 2025 as a spinout from the University of Sheffield's School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering, building on more than 20 years of biomanufacturing research at the university. The company was founded by Ed Curry, Melinda Pohle, Professor Adam Brown and Professor David James.
The company's offering has two parts. The first is a proprietary cell profiling platform that creates a detailed fingerprint of how cells behave during manufacturing, identifying the critical cellular parameters and processes that limit yield and quality. The second is a set of licensable media additives, formulated as small molecules and compatible with bioreactors, designed to target the specific bottlenecks the profiling identifies. Its profiling service is described as delivering data in as little as two weeks.
Silvia Bio focuses on Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells, which are widely used to manufacture monoclonal antibodies and other therapeutic proteins, and on complex biologics such as gene therapies. Its customers are biopharmaceutical companies, and case studies on its website cover improving monoclonal antibody production and identifying bottlenecks in CHO cell clones and pools for host cell line development.
In October 2026 the company raised £3 million in seed funding led by Northern Gritstone, with participation from the Parkwalk Northern Universities Venture Fund, the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund, Wren Capital and angel investors. The funding is intended to move the company from the university into dedicated laboratory space at the Sheffield Innovation Centre, automate manual processes, triple headcount and expand commercial capacity.
