About
SMART Photonics is an independent pure-play Indium Phosphide (InP) foundry based at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, Netherlands. It was founded in 2012 by Richard Visser as a spin-off of Eindhoven University of Technology and Philips, and it develops and manufactures photonic integrated circuits (PICs) that process and transmit information using light instead of electrons. The company offers multi-project wafer runs, process design kits, a library of validated building blocks, and high-volume manufacturing under an open foundry model in which customers retain ownership of their intellectual property.
The company's chips serve data and telecommunications, including 800Gb/s and higher data center transceivers and 5G/6G applications, as well as sensing applications such as LiDAR for automotive, medical sensing and quantum key distribution. In 2024 it moved its production from 3-inch to 4-inch wafers, doubling chip output, and it received ISO 9001 certification in August 2024. Its customers include leading US, European and Asian companies and a range of scale-up companies developing photonic applications.
In 2023 SMART Photonics raised €100M in debt funding from the Dutch government's PhotonDelta programme and industry and financial players including ASML, NXP, VDL Groep, ING and Deep Tech Fund. Since 2020 it has been building out its capacity, and in March 2026 construction began on a 6-inch InP pilot line at the High Tech Campus, led by TNO, designed to reach 20,000 six-inch wafers per year. In September 2026 it announced an open-access foundry service with GlobalFoundries combining silicon and Indium Phosphide photonic platforms.
