About
Sunfire SE is a Dresden-based electrolysis company that develops and manufactures industrial electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. It was founded in 2010 in Dresden by Nils Aldag, Christian von Olshausen and Carl Berninghausen, who had previously researched alternative fuels. Early on the company pioneered power-to-liquids synthetic fuel production, opening a demonstration e-fuel plant in Dresden in 2014, and in 2011 it acquired the Dresden solid oxide cell developer Staxera to build its high-temperature electrolysis (SOEC) technology.
Sunfire's portfolio covers two electrolysis technologies: pressurized alkaline electrolysis (AEL), added through the 2021 acquisition of Swiss IHT SA, and solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC). Its HyLink Alkaline 23 system, a 50 MW pressurized alkaline unit, was launched in April 2026 and is marketed as reducing total installed costs for customers by up to 50 percent. The company's production base includes Dresden headquarters and production, a Solingen electroplating and coating site acquired in 2021, and sites in Magdeburg and Berlin. In 2024 it spun off its fuel cell business to focus fully on electrolysis.
Customers and projects include RWE's Lingen GetH2 Nukleus project, for which Sunfire supplies alkaline electrolyzer stacks, a 200 MW order in Spain for plants in Cartagena and Muskiz, a 10 MW electrolyzer at the Port of Bilbao, a long-term preferred-supplier partnership with Nordic Ren-Gas in Finland, and a SOEC system at the Neste refinery in Rotterdam. The company reports an electrolyzer order backlog above 800 MW and targets installing several gigawatts of electrolysis capacity by 2030. In 2024 it secured more than EUR 500 million in financing, comprising a EUR 215 million Series E equity round, a European Investment Bank loan of up to EUR 100 million and access to about EUR 200 million in grants, and in January 2025 it obtained a EUR 200 million guarantee financing led by Commerzbank. Sunfire is building a SOEC test facility at the Industriepark Lausitz in Schwarzheide alongside BASF.
