About
THYRA GmbH is a German defence-technology startup headquartered in Darmstadt, Hesse, founded in 2023 by Wingcopter co-founders Jonathan Hesselbarth and Tom Plümmer. The company specialises in hardware-based, kinetic counter-UAS (C-UAS) systems, transferring civilian drone engineering expertise into the military interception domain to address the growing threat of low-cost hostile drones.
The company's flagship product is Neptor, a high-speed autonomous drone interceptor with a maximum take-off weight of 3.2 kg, a top speed of 350 km/h, a thermal detection range of up to 24 km, and a 0.5 kg payload. Neptor uses a "lock-before-launch" principle—an operator designates the target before launch and the drone then autonomously completes the intercept. The system is offered in two configurations: a man-portable MANPAD tube launcher and a battery-buffered stationary remote launcher for unattended, concealed deployment. Development and manufacturing are conducted entirely in Germany.
THYRA's target customers include NATO military units, critical infrastructure operators, and defence ministries seeking cost-effective kinetic layers for layered air-defence architectures. The company is closely embedded in the Hessian drone ecosystem centred on TU Darmstadt and the Hessisches Drohnenkompetenzzentrum (HDKZ). In April 2026, THYRA signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ukrainian defence manufacturer TAF Industries to establish a joint venture for mass production of interceptor drones in Germany under the "Build with Ukraine" initiative, signed at the Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin during the Zelenskyy–Merz bilateral summit. The system was publicly showcased at Euro Defence Expo 2026 in Essen in September 2026.
