About

TWAICE is a Munich-based company that provides predictive analytics software for lithium-ion batteries. Founded in 2018 as a spin-off from the Technical University of Munich by Stephan Rohr and Michael Baumann, it builds a digital twin of battery systems that combines battery engineering knowledge with artificial intelligence. Its platform serves battery energy storage system (BESS) asset managers and operators, as well as automotive manufacturers working on battery development and operation.

The software ingests field data from battery management systems and combines it with physical and data-driven battery models to predict health, safety risks, degradation and remaining lifetime. These capabilities support warranty management, predictive maintenance and certification of batteries for second-life use. Product releases include the Performance Manager (2024), Roundtrip Efficiency tracking and a BESS Hierarchy Diagram (2025), and a consolidated Error Codes view (2026).

Customers include several major automotive OEMs and renewable energy developers and operators. Announced BESS deployments include BW ESS, Second Foundation, Tauber-Solar and BayWa r.e., the latter for a 282 MWh project in Lower Saxony. Partners include Analog Devices, Doosan GridTech, Element, Modo Energy and Fullmark Energy. The company has offices in Munich, Chicago and Paris, and its BESS business nearly tripled in size in 2025.

TWAICE has raised more than 60 million euros across seed, Series A, Series B and venture debt financing. In February 2026 it secured 24 million euros in venture debt from the European Investment Bank, backed by the InvestEU programme, to fund global expansion of its BESS analytics platform.
